OUR PARTNERS

ASHA NEPAL

Asha Nepal is a human rights organisation in Kathmandu, Nepal working for the social and economic empowerment of Nepali women and girls affected by sex trafficking and sexual abuse.

Asha Nepal provides holistic individually tailored support to those affected by sex trafficking through counselling, formal education, life skills and therapeutic programs.

Asha Nepal believes an education gives a child a future. Girls, at a minimum, attend school to Year 10, others complete Year 12, while a few study at university, all with the assistance of donor scholarships.

The Family Group Homes, an alternative to institution living, provide a safe nurturing family environment with a ‘mother’ for those in need of longer- term care. They are in walking distance of the Asha Centre and Office in suburban Kathmandu where the team of dedicated salaried staff work.

The Family Preservation and Strengthening Programs, now a priority, work to re-establish and maintain families affected by trafficking and abuse and also those at risk.

The Job Coordination Program aims to provide meaningful employment as a means to social reintegration, independence and dignity. Some school leavers take a gap year, and through employment, save to help pay for their further studies and vocational training.

Asha Nepal also works to prevent trafficking through awareness programs. It also provides seed loans for small business start- ups for at risk women and families.

SAMUNNAT NEPAL

Samunnat Nepal is a grassroots NGO based in Birtamod, Jhapa, approximately 500km east of Kathmandu. A group of friends and colleagues started Samunnat Nepal in 2006 to empower women who have endured any type of violence.

They believe that women need a sustainable source of income to reduce their vulnerability to violence and exploitation and if they are to have independence and greater control in their lives.

Samunnat Nepal is a place where the women meet with each other, support one another and learn from shared experiences.

Samunnat Nepal receives no government funding and the bulk of our budget to help women comes from the sales of their polymer jewellery. They work hard to make sure that Samunnat Nepal is an organisation of compassion, clarity, collaboration, consultation and clear, open communication.

SAMUNNAT NEPAL'S PRIORITIES
  • Providing legal support to help women obtain their rights to divorce, compensation, property and/ or justice.
  • Providing training about self-advocacy, legal processes and mental, physical and psychological health.
  • Providing individually tailored income generation training designed to be realistic and sustainable. This may include tailoring, pickle production, dairy cow management, small business operation and bookkeeping among others. They have their own catering crew and day care centre which provide employment. Some women are trained in the production of polymer clay jewellery. Samunnat Nepal strives to help the women to discover their own strengths and resources.
  • Providing limited short term accommodation to women in need and long term accommodation for exceptional circumstances.
