Join us on a for-purpose trip to Nepal

Two trips on offer in 2026 - Annapurna Region and Everest Region
Travel to Nepal with Fernwood Tuggeranong
& Project Didi Australia
Our unique trips offer an opportunity to trek the spectacular Himalayas and learn from women driving change in their communties.

Our trips make a tangible difference to survivors of trafficking and violence in Nepal through a donation to Project Didi's locally-led partner organisation, Asha Nepal. You'll meet with Asha Nepal's team and make a meal with their housmothers, who provide critical care to children who are rebuilding their lives after violence.

You'll travel with Project Didi's experienced travel partner, World Horizons, and be guided by
Jigme Tshering - the best of the best in guiding! He has over 150 Himalayan expeditions under his belt!

In 2026, we're offering two opportunities to travel to Nepal and contribute to strong futures for survivors.
Annapurna Region
25 April - 9 May 2026

Trek the stunning Khopra Ridge Circuit, offering views of some of the highest mountains in the world - the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges and the Kali Gandaki Gorge.

Trek through rice terraces, small settlements and old growth rhododendron forests to the high pastures of Khopra Ridge. Our highest point of 3,420m.

On either side of the trek spend a few days in Kathmandu and Pokhara, set on the beautiful Phewa Lake.

Your donation towards strong futures for women & girls
Our trips celebrate the strength and resilience of women. Through connecting with our local partner organisation, you'll gain a unique insight into the challenges facing Nepali women and the resourceful ways they are building brighter futures.

Your trip is an investment in these futures. We ask you to fundraise AU$500 - $1,000 ahead of your trip. Your tax deductible donation goes directly to our partner, Asha Nepal, contributing to care, counselling, education and employment pathways for survivors of trafficking and gender-based violence.

Project Didi will support your fundraising, including providing ideas and resources and supporting fundraising events and activities.

A main highlight, and the whole reason for our trip, was supporting Project Didi. We were so warmly welcomed by the most amazing support staff, girls and housemothers. I will forever remember how truly inspirational and remarkable they are. Their beautiful smiles lit up the whole room.

The small group size and the amazing, knowledgeable, and supportive crew made this journey a really memorable, magical experience.

We encourage you to book as soon as possible, as we have limited places on each trip.

How big will the group be?
Between 11 and 16 people.
Who is our guide?
Jigme Tshering, your guide, is a very experienced Himalayan trekking guide - over to Jigme to introduce himself...

I was born and brought up in a place called Darjeeling popularly known as the “Queen of Hills” I grew up in a joint family with my parents, siblings, uncle, aunts and cousins. We had the most amazing and fun filled childhood mostly playing outdoor games hiking in the foothills of Darjeeling.

Every morning walking around the mall looking at the breathtaking view of the 3rd highest mountain in the world Mount Kanchenjunga motivated and inspired me to take on the challenge to be a professional Trek leader. So I enroll for the Adventure, Basic and Advance Course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling established by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa (the first man along with Sir Edmund Hillary who conquered Mount Everest 1953, 29 May) The First Mountaineering Institute in India. My mind and goal was set to the field of adventure and be with wilderness and the beauty of nature.

After I completed my courses I was ready to take up more changeling roles in my leadership of guiding in the Himalaya region specially Nepal. I set off to Nepal in 1996 to fulfill my dreams as Mountain guide and Tour leader.
My first trek was the Classic Everest Trek to Everest Base Camp for 21 days. Its one of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery on route. I still remember it like yesterday. It was the most enriching experience for me and I had already fallen in love with the idea of going on such adventures and treks in the future. This is how my journey began. After guiding for 22 years the Everest Region is still my favorite area. I never get tired of it and it is still as exciting as my first time.

This region is home to an indigenous group of people called the Sherpas. Their hospitality and warmth is incomparable to anyone else’s in the world and is probably why the Everest region is my second home and I always look forward to going back there with zeal and enthusiasm.

For me guiding to the Himalaya has now been a passion and has enriched my knowledge of the spiritual mountains of the Himalaya and the people who live there.
What level of fitness do I need for this trip?
You must be in good health and physical condition to participate on the trip. Both treks are moderate to challenging, so if you’re not doing regular exercise we recommend you start preparing at least three to four months before departure. The treks go to areas where there may be restricted access to normal medical services or hospital facilities for serious problems.

There will also be days in Kathmandu that include walking on uneven surfaces for several hours.

It is a condition of booking, that you complete a medical declaration, advising Project Didi Australia and World Horizons of any pre-existing condition that might impact your participation in the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. If you do not wish to complete a medical declaration, you will be required to provide a medical clearance to participate on the trip from a qualified medical practitioner.
Will we be volunteering?
We promote locally driven, sustainable and skilled volunteering. Our trips do not provide enough time to understand a community's needs and develop the strong relationships needed for volunteering. While our trip does not include volunteering, you will make a lasting impact on the organisations you visit through your donation to their work. We also believe their creativity and courage will make a lasting impact on you!
Is the trip suitable for under 18-year-olds?
Please send us an email at [email protected] and we can chat about this further.
Can I bring along a friend that's not a Fernwood Tuggeranong member?
Yes! These trips are open to Fernwood members and friends. Please share with your family and friends.
